In this archival documentary essay, Adam Curtis examines how politicians, financiers, and technocrats since the 1970s retreated from the complexity of real-world problems and constructed an artificial, simplified simulacrum of reality. Tracing threads from New York's fiscal crisis to suicide bombing in the Middle East and modern information warfare, the film argues that both power structures and the public became trapped in a system everyone knows is failing, yet no one can imagine replacing.
