The Man with the Compound Eyes

When an enormous Pacific trash vortex breaks loose and collides with the eastern coast of Taiwan, it sets off an unprecedented ecological catastrophe and brings together two disparate souls: Atile'i, an exiled teenage castaway from the mythical oceanic island of Wayo Wayo, and Alice Shih, a grieving university professor living in an eroding coastal house who is contemplating suicide after the mysterious disappearance of her Danish husband and young son. Together with an indigenous mountain hunter, an activist cafe owner, and a haunting apparition known as the man with the compound eyes, their journeys intertwine into a lyrical, magical-realist meditation on climate grief, memory, indigenous myth, and the interconnected survival of humanity and the natural world.
