Líbranos del bienRicardo Palmera and Rodrigo Tovar Pupo grew up in wealthy families in Valledupar, Colombia, attended the same private school, and joined the same country club. Decades later, Palmera became Simón Trinidad, a senior FARC commander, while Tovar became Jorge 40, head of the Northern Bloc paramilitaries. Drawing on personal acquaintances and local reporting, Alonso Sánchez Baute traces their childhoods, political turns, and eventual leadership on opposing sides of the Colombian conflict.

An enjoyable, addictive read that reveals a conflict many of us have neither experienced nor understood; the evocative way the author writes and details each setting truly places the reader’s mind right there. Highly recommended!
Javier ardila on Goodreads A very good book that brings us closer to the cultural and social reality of our country. Valledupar and its people are spectacular; it is such a sorrowful history of violence in this region. I was not familiar with the author, but I loved his writing style.
From Goodreads At first I felt lost with so many characters and intertwining families, but gradually navigated the maze of people and came to understand the story—the history of Valledupar, which in the end mirrors the repeated history of Colombia. It is refreshing that "violence," though central to the book, is not made graphic and is often merely insinuated.
