Ricardo Palmera and Rodrigo Tovar Pupo grew up in wealthy families in Valledupar, Colombia, attended the same private school, and joined the same country club. Decades later, Palmera became Simón Trinidad, a senior FARC commander, while Tovar became Jorge 40, head of the Northern Bloc paramilitaries. Drawing on personal acquaintances and local reporting, Alonso Sánchez Baute traces their childhoods, political turns, and eventual leadership on opposing sides of the Colombian conflict.
