Oh yes! I love it. Stellan mirrors the characters to the point of losing his soul. But 'the other was on the other side' and these people of Sunne are described in short sentences to be savored. One wonders what he wants, what is to be understood, only to finally discover Stellan—the sum of all these townspeople—a tormented and broken soul. Once past the mirror he holds up to divert our gaze, we find him as the true protagonist of his guestbook, like 'poorly stowed cargo'.
Madeleine Decker on Goodreads With immense storytelling joy and love for his characters, Tunström has composed a great little glimpse of life. And just like life itself, far from everything is bright and cheerful; there are suggestive shadows cast around the characters and at bottom a melancholic tone, a retrospective gaze.
Robin Dronsfield on Goodreads A somewhat incredible novel. Tunström's joy of storytelling, character development, and subtle linguistic nuances are in a class of their own. A few slower parts pull it down slightly, but I love how this book becomes something entirely different from what you expect. It turns into something both classic and innovative, and above all something that feels raw, authentic, bleeding, and pounding.
