Kafka on the Shore

• Murakami opens the door to an unexpected, slow-burning, captivating magical realism. Every character in this novel exudes uniqueness; they are all special, boundless, absorbing. Kafka on the Shore is a work that captures, moves, and thrills. It overflows the boundaries between the human and the non-human, at times rendering that divide entirely irrelevant.

• Though the story is different, it still carries strong echoes of Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World. In the metaphor of the world woven through dual plotlines, only the library exists as a 'non-metaphor'—and this setup itself is perhaps a metaphor, singing praise to the memory of human emotion.

• Kafka on the Shore is quite peak Murakami Magical realism. The world is not whimsical and magical, it is strange, unexplainable and somewhat off. The characters are strange but interesting, the story of Satoru Nakata is slowly revealed and is in my opinion rewarding. Everything sort of links together but at the same time doesn't.

• I also read kafka on the shore as my first murakami book in 2022 while in a turbulent time in my life. It gave me a new perspective and appreciation about life and the unknown. I hadn’t been reading books for about 10 years at that point, so im grateful to Mr Murakami for bringing back joy in reading and I’ve been steadily working through his catalogue. Kots is still is my favourite book of his :)

• Loved it. Read it for a second time after several years now, read most of his books too, some of them - two to three times. I love the characters, the plot and the magical realism element. To sum up shortly, the visuals one imagines while reading and the overall feeling that a book creates for me is key. And I never read any other book that made me shiver so many times and become so immersed in the story. IMHO it’s Murakami’s magnum opus.
