Before Us
Prima di noiBeginning in the chaos of the Caporetto retreat in 1917, when army deserter Maurizio Sartori encounters Nadia in a Friulian farmhouse, this epic generational saga chronicles nearly a century of Italian history through four generations of the Sartori family. Moving from rural northern Italy to postwar industrial Milan, the family confronts the ravages of two world wars, political extremism, social upheavals, and the burden of inherited guilt and silence, culminating in 2012 when their descendant seeks reconciliation with their collective past.

This is also thanks to Giorgio Fontana's limpid, simple, and fluid prose, which lends strength and credibility to every character. I had known and appreciated Fontana's prose with Morte di un uomo felice (also published by Sellerio), and with Prima di noi he confirms himself, in my view, as a writer of great talent and among the finest of his generation.
Liborio Volpe on CriticaLetteraria In recent days, I came across a kind of Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoevsky: Prima di noi, by Giorgio Fontana (b. 1981), a massive 886-page volume published by Sellerio, where events, characters, sex, philosophical and political reflections, and twentieth-century Italian history merge into an enthralling tale, written with skill and dialogue talent
Francesco Cataluccio on Il Post Prima di noi (Sellerio, 890 pp., €22) is a wonderful surprise: a true novel, written for novel lovers, with little to envy the best counterparts of other contemporary literary traditions. The story spans nearly a century, from the Great War to the last decade, in the form of a family saga: four generations, from those on the front lines in 1917 to those born in the 1980s (like the author, born in 1981).
