In the autumn of 2021, Gothenburg teacher and novelist Karl Hillberg is hired by the widow of an Italian orchestra conductor to write her late husband's biography. Karl has previously written only fiction. The project takes him from Sweden to Rome and New York as he interviews the conductor's friends and associates. As he reconstructs the conductor's career from the 1970s onward, he suspects another writer is pursuing the same private archives.
