Grim, Melville-esque take an a society paralyzed by its regulations. One can "see" the paranoia, the uncertainty on the background until it becomes the protagonist of the film. Just like that everything changes. Humanity struggles with rule-book. The simplicity with Pitts's cinema always surprises but the straightforwardness of The Hunter is something else - in its straightforwardness, it is complicated and illuminating. The forest labyrinth is just continuum to the cityscape.
V. Lepistö on Letterboxd Man "caught in the machine" lashes out at what's hurting him. Meaning is created in mood and atmosphere. Resists the 60 cuts per minute minimum of modern film language and is very low on dialogue to create a sense of the man's isolation. Thought provoking and enjoyable.
phil haigh on Letterboxd A well-crafted and remarkably unique thriller, the likes of which we have rarely seen in Iranian cinema. For the first time, a fresh depiction of Tehran and full-blown civil unrest are brought to screen. Rafi Pitts delivers a perfectly measured, introspective performance matching the mood to create a quietly rebellious character. Production and costume design are superb, directed with precision, concluding cleanly without needless dragging.
