  • An excellent psychological horror-thriller that sets up a baffling premise, then consistently wrong-foots the audience for an hour before finding time to offer an ingenious, satisfying and in its own way deeply disturbing climax.

  • Writer-director Joko Anwar slots everything together nicely. The plot twists and details may not hold up under further scrutiny, but they work well enough while the movie is taking everyone along for one hell of a ride. There are also plenty of scenes in the first half of the movie that play out as straight slices of genre fare and those are handled perfectly by Anwar.

  • The fourth feature from Indonesian writer/director Joko Anwar, Ritual strives repeatedly to squeeze new thrills from hoary genre cliches – the cabin in the woods, the machete-wielding killer, the (wo)mantraps and massacres, the cat-and-mouse and slash-and-dash – by constructing for itself a singular and devious narrative perspective.
