Few stand-up comics can play straight roles convincingly, but Connolly is a great choice to play John Brown’s big personality, fierce loyalty and informal demeanour. Antony Sher is also great fun as a wonderfully oleaginous Benjamin Disraeli, but this is all about John Brown’s all-consuming devotion to the Queen. For all the good performances, there isn’t enough of a story and we don’t learn much about Brown’s previous life or, indeed, his life outside work.
Richard on Letterboxd Judi Dench gives a wonderful performance as Queen Victoria which manages to lift this film out of total mediocrity
