Detective Kien: The Headless Horror

Thám tử Kiên: Kỳ án không đầu

In 19th-century Vietnam, a string of decapitated bodies near an isolated village sparks rumors of a vengeful water spirit. When a young woman disappears, her aunt turns to imperial investigator Kien, an old acquaintance who dismisses the supernatural panic and sets out to uncover the mortal schemes behind the killings.

  • 10 out of 10, the best movie I've ever seen in theaters. Maybe because it's a Vietnamese production that turned out so well, the experience this time was truly thrilling!

  • In my view the movie was completely worth the money; if I had to deduct points I'd take off 0.25 for somewhat predictable plot points, but add back 0.25 because the execution of that simplicity was immensely captivating.

  • A great movie, nothing to fault, logical storyline, no unnecessary filler, well-paced without feeling rushed. Please go support this film everyone!

  • In terms of pure plot, I found myself quite charmed by the events in Detective Kien. The mystery unfolds quite nicely and never resorts to cheap reveals or bad twists. It builds a very classic, good faith mystery that spends enough time looking at one part of the story long enough that you end up forgetting about other plot elements until it’s time for them to make their reappearance. Victor Vu brings a level of genre savviness to keep things moving at a good pace.

  • If you’re looking for an engaging (and often sweeping in scope) mystery film…you could do a lot worse than Detective Kien: The Headless Horror. You’ll get a bit of horror, a lot of intrigue…and even some climactic sword fighting. Aside from a few unnecessary dead ends in the primary investigation…Detective Kien: The Headless Horror delivers beautiful vistas, memorable characters and a worthwhile mystery.
