The Vast of Night

• The sound creates the entire atmosphere of the film, with an interesting soundtrack and solid performances. Had the movie saved for at least 4 years and only now got around to watching it. The experience is very much worth it (great for many, bad for a few).

• Goosebumps. For the last twenty minutes of this film, I had literal goosebumps. I'm honestly in awe of the fact that this is a debut. This flung me back to my childhood listening to radio stage plays, and with everything going on in the world, for an hour and a half, I got to completely unplug. Sierra McCormick is definitely one to watch.

• The Vast of Night is one film I was not expecting to love as much as I do. This film captures the essence and makings of an unforgettable indie sci-fi flick. The plot of the film is simple enough but the way it unravels to the audience is what grasped my attention. Some have described this movie as "slow-paced", but for me, it was over in a blink of an eye. From its opening scene until the final frame, I found myself in a daze for 90-minutes and I was so absorbed into this story.

• "The Vast of Night" is a very refined, quiet Amazon Exclusive and a genuine treat. A slow-burning UFO goosebumps film in pure 50s style that firmly marks rookie director Andrew Patterson for bigger things! Almost more of an audio play and campfire ghost story than an alien-invasion mystery flick, this throwback to a more atmospheric era is, in my opinion, a true genre highlight in this strange film year.

• There are long takes, single-act stage monologues, an impressive continuous sequence shot that starts with the camera skimming the grass like in a Sam Raimi film before turning quite virtuosic, and above all, excellent sound design and very effective editing.
