Anvil! The Story of Anvil

This heartfelt rock documentary follows Steve 'Lips' Kudlow and Robb Reiner, founding members of the influential 1980s Canadian speed metal band Anvil. Decades after inspiring giants like Metallica and Slayer, the aging duo refuses to give up on their rock-and-roll dream, persevering through a disastrous European tour, personal sacrifice, and financial hardship in an all-out effort to record a thirteenth studio album.

  • THE STORY OF ANVIL is filled with the sense of chasing an evasive dream, while languishing in obscurity... and the real possibility it’s too late. It reminds me of AMERICAN MOVIE, despite the filmmaker in that never having had an initial rush of stardom like Anvil did. Feeling you were meant for greater things is a hell of an existence. Are you warm? Because I’m sweating over here suddenly!

  • Out of all the bts music documentaries coming from MTV and VH1, this is certainly one of the best. I was completely hooked from beginning to end, and differently to many other musical biopics, you get to actually see the reality of whats to be a band at the top and then at the almost very bottom, not the drugs or the lifestyle of its member but having promoters trying to sabotage you and the importance of having a good agent.

  • This is the sound of optimism: “Everything on the tour went drastically wrong. But at least there was a tour for it to go wrong on.” The optimist is Steve “Lips” Kudlow, lead guitarist in Anvil, a band you’ve never heard of. In 1973, he made a friend named Robb Reiner in Toronto, who had a drum set, and they vowed to make rock ‘n’ roll until they were old. Now they are old, at least for heavy metal rockers.
