Golden Kamuy

• yeah it’s often violent and/or crude but the series is just so charming and full of heart. you can really tell how much effort and care Satoru Noda puts into the cultural and historical aspect, and it’s hard not to appreciate it. he not only does a ton of research, but he’s a great writer on top of that. the anime adaptation gets better and better as it goes and the manga is incredible as well. it quickly became one of my favorite series

• There's a lot of different things I appreciate about the series, but one of my favorite aspects of it is how it handles its characters. While Golden Kamuy does have a primary set of main characters it focuses on (Sugimoto's group), it also frequently shifts the perspective to side characters and other factions, sometimes with stories and arcs completely isolated from what Sugimoto/Asirpa is doing.

• What you see throughout this anime is that the decisions characters make effects their chances of survival. Due to the plot being what it is, combined with the characters having to survive in the wilderness, the death of any main character is a realistic possibility. For me personally this is a welcome change from most anime and it kept me hooked on this anime. Without going into spoilers, the overall plot grabs your attention and keeps you hooked episode to episode.

• The way the storyteller go back and forth between life or death seriousness into a funny moment is really well done and almost always worked on me. Just when things get super intense, the author surprises you with a laugh. And as soon as you get comfortable laughing it up, the author throws you into the most serious of situations.

• I truly fell in love with this anime, both in how it was made and in its substance. The work stands out for its originality, and it worked wonderfully for me: the quirky plot holds together solidly, the characters—each more unhinged than the last—are deeply endearing, and the glimpses into the Ainu way of life blend seamlessly with breathless action sequences. The omnipresent humor is also remarkably distinctive; I had never encountered anything quite like it.
